Helpful hints

Santa & baby.

First time meeting Santa? Here is how to make it a fun one.

A few things worth keeping in mind for your little one.

One

Consider the age of your little one.

Newborns are easy street: they sleep through everything. Do remind Santa to put on fresh gloves — he sees a lot of germ-filled little tykes in a day.

Slightly older babies in a separation-anxiety stage may have a rougher time with the big ol’ scary dude. Ease in with a family shot while you are holding them, then hand over.

Two

Go during happy hour.

Book for when your baby is happy and alert. Close to nap time is asking for trouble; just after a morning nap is ideal. Fed, happy tummy, and a spare diaper in the bag.

Three

Plan what to wear in advance.

Pick the outfit the night before and pack a backup. And dress yourself for the camera too, in case you end up in the shot keeping baby happy.

Four

Take a toy.

Something to wave near the photographer keeps baby looking at the camera. Bring the lovey too.

Five

Be jolly, but do not overhype.

Babies pick up on their parents’ stress, so enjoy it. Even a crying-baby picture is a memory.

If your child is old enough to understand, do not overhype it — excitement turns to anxiety. Laid back, a happy occasion but no great event. And talk about giving Santa their wish list rather than sitting on his lap.

Baby will not remember his first Santa visit.
But you will.

Santa keeps fresh gloves in his pocket.

Ask. He would rather you did.
